The Broadway and West End phenomenon, Kinky Boots The Musical, is strutting back to Sunderland in December in a brand-new production with a star cast including Strictly Dan Partridge (Grease), Courtney Bowman (Six) Scott Paige (The Addams Family) and Tosh Wanogho-Maud (Titanique, Ain’t Too Proud, Bridgerton) as Lola. This joy-filled sensation, based on a true story and hit movie, features Tony® and Grammy® winning music and lyrics by pop icon Cyndi Lauper, a hilarious and life-affirming book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein and is directed by Nikolai Foster (Grease and An Officer and a Gentleman).

After inheriting his family's failing shoe factory and with a relationship on the rocks, life is proving to be very challenging for Charlie Price. That is until he meets Lola, a drag queen whose sparkle and unsteady heels might just hold the answer to saving the struggling business.

Vesta Tilley laid the foundation stone of what is now the Sunderland Empire on 29 September 1906 and took to the stage on 1 July 1907 to officially declare the theatre open. Masterminded by two of the contemporary heads of British theatre, Edward Moss and Oswald Stoll, the Sunderland Empire Theatre has undergone many changes since it opened but remains the North East’s premier entertainment venue.
