Created by Cuban ballet star Carlos Acosta, the classic and well loved story of Carmen has been injected with his irresistible flair and energy. Acosta's incredibly versatile company of Cuban dancers return, ready to wow with this powerful and passionate ballet, spiked with a Latin twist. Don José falls deeply in love with Carmen and sacrifices everything to be with her. But when Carmen becomes infatuated with toreador Escamillo she spurns Don José, whose love quickly turns to violent jealousy - all with tragic consequences.

Carlos Acosta's Carmen

Bizet’s Carmen is considered one of the most powerful operas ever written and its gorgeous melodies have a hold on the popular imagination – Escamillo’s Toreador Song, Carmen’s Habanera and Don José’s Flower Song are among the most widely known and enjoyed pieces of Western classical music.

This version of Carmen is set to Rodion Shchedrin's orchestration of Bizet's opera score with additional Cuban music.

Don't miss this electric interpretation of Carmen performed by Acosta's impressive Havana-based company.

Originally The New Theatre, it opened on Boxing Day, 1912. It went through several iterations, being renamed once before becoming the Opera House in 1920. It's also been used for different functions; as a cinema in WW2, then a bingo hall before reopening as a theatre again in 1984. Since, it has hosted magnificent shows like Barnum and Phantom of the Opera.
